Latvia unveils memorial to people who saved Jews during WWII By Associated Press Latvia's top government officials and Jewish leaders on Wednesday unveiled a memorial to Latvians who tried to save Jews during World War II. Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga unveiled the memorial, a large white wall tilting on short legs that are inscribed with the names of those who saved Jews. quot; These people - 269 in all if I am not mistaken - put their lives to risk. This was a special kind of heroism, quot; Vike-Freiberga, whose term as president ends on Saturday, told the 200 people gathered at the ceremony in downtown Riga. The memorial, designed by Latvian artist Elina Lazdina, is located on the site of a synagogue that was burned down on July 4, 1941, killing an unidentified number of Jews who had hidden inside. July 4 is therefore regarded a day of mourning for Latvia's Jewish community. Some 70,000 Jews were killed in Latvia during the war. INFO: a href= http://www.haaretz.com www.haaretz.com /a

Traditional healing ceremonies have been lauded as an effective and integral aspect of psychosocial healing and reintegration in Sierra Leone for girls associated with the fighting forces. Reintegration has proven extremely difficult for these girls. They were stigmatized by their families and communities who saw them as “impure” as a result of sexual abuse. They have been verbally and physically attacked, restricted from mingling with family and community and prohibited from marrying. Their spiritual pollution is believed to cause misfortune, bad harvests and health problems. While empirical evidence leads us to believe that indigenous practice plays a fundamental role in the reconciliation process, how and why this is so is poorly understood. My research examined how traditional purification rituals contribute to psychosocial healing and reintegration. This portrait of George Washingtonn (Catalog Number INDE44867) was executed Rembrandt Peale in 1848. Having painted his first portrait of Washington in 1795, Peale subsequently envisioned an epic equestrian portrait for permanent display in the Capital. In 1824, he began work on this monumental canvas, entitled i George Washington Before Yorktown /i , which he intended for purchase by Congress, but which remained in his studio until privately soldin 1862 to the City of Phildaelphia. George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States from 1789–1797 after serving as Commander-in-Chief and leading the Continental Army to victory over the Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War. As president, he established many of the customs and usages of the new government's executive department. His unilateral Proclamation of Neutrality of 1793 provided a basis for avoiding any involvement in foreign conflicts. He supported plans to build a strong central government by funding the national debt, implementing an effective tax system, and creating a national bank. This portrait of George Washingtonn (Catalog Number INDE14171) was executed James Peale, circa 1790. James Peale modeled his portrait of Washington at the Battle of Yorktown off a 1787 portrait by his older brother, Charles Willson Peale's (owned by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts). James borrowed the background landscape, perhaps, from Charles' 1874 full length portrait (now owned by the Fogg Museum of Art). Perhaps in reference to the two brothers' joint Revolutionary experience, James included them in the painting over the right shoulder of Washington. This portrait is believed to have been purchased by John Dunlap from the Peale family at an unknown date. It was purchased by John Binns from John Dunlap, circa 1810, and then by the City of Philadelphia in 1849. This portrait of Thaddeus Kosciuszko (Catalog Number INDE14082) was executed by Julian Rys, modeled after an unidentified source, in 1897. Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kościuszko (1746 – 1817) was a Polish, American, Belarusian and Lithuanian national hero and general. He led the Kościuszko Uprising (1794) against Imperial Russia. Prior to leading the 1794 Uprising, he had fought in the American Revolutionary War as a Colonel in the Continental Army. In 1783, in recognition of his dedicated service, he had been brevetted by the Continental Congress to the rank of Brigadier General, and that same year he had become a naturalized citizen of the United States. Kosciuszko visited Philadelphia in 1797, living in a boarding house at Third and Pine Streets. His presence reinforced the city's image as a haven for dissenters. This portrait of John Hancock (Catalog Number INDE14063) was executed by Samuel Finley Breese Morse, circa 1816. When Philadelphia publisher Joseph Delaplaine compiled his i Repository of the Lives and Portraits of Distinguished Americans /i , he commissioned several artists for paintings of his intended subjects. In 1816, Boston artist-inventor Samuel F.B. Morse copied for Delaplaine John Singleton's 1765 full-length portrait of Hancock (now on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). Although Delaplaine eventually omitted Hancock fromt he i Repository /i , he retained the Morse portrait for the public gallery he opened in 1819. Four years later, financial failure forced him to sell his collection and it was purchased Joseph Reed, recorder of the City of Philadelphia and then subsequently by Charles Willson Peale's son, Rubens, for use in the New York Peale Museum in 1825. Rubens sold the Museum's contents in 1842, and Phineas T. Barnum purchased it in 1843. Barnum's museum burned, but the Hancock portrait was saved and returned to the Peale family in time to be sold in the 1854 Peale Museum auction, when it was bought by the City of Philadelphia. John Hancock (1737-1794) was a Massachusetts merchant and prominent patriot of the American Revolution. He served as President of the Second Continental Congress and was the first Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but is most famous for his prominent signature on the United States Declaration of Independence.
