[Image] Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania - A giraffe watches as a Land Rover drives by. The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest of all land-living animal species. Males can be 4.8 to 5.5 metres (16 to 18 feet) tall and weigh up to 1,360 kilograms (3,000 pounds). The giraffe is related to deer and cattle, but is placed in a separate family, the Giraffidae, consisting only of the giraffe and its closest relative, the okapi. Its range extends from Chad to South Africa. Giraffes can inhabit savannas, grasslands, or open woodlands. They prefer areas enriched with Acacia growth. They often drink, and as a result, they can spend long periods of time in dry, arid areas. When searching for more food they will venture into areas with denser foliage. Modifications to the giraffe's structure have evolved, particularly to the circulatory system. A giraffe's heart, which can weigh up to 10 kg (22 lb) and measure about 2 feet long, has to generate around double the normal blood pressure for an average large mammal in order to maintain blood flow to the brain against gravity.

[Image] So this is how it looks when Maple seed's inside is eaten by squirrels. I came to notice about this quot;maple seeds' thing like a week ago. There was something really 'peak' - rush and frenzy activities were going on all over in the backyard lawn. All squirrels and chipmunks were constantly, almost all day long, every hour - picking up something from the lawn and chewing. What are they eating out of grasses? I wondered. (Never knew anything about maple seeds.) And they were all very relentless - and I could see getting rounder and rounder every day. I see a chipmunk on the lawn. And I don't understand what's it's so heckishly eating. It looks like it's pushing in piece of old dried leaf - one after another into its mouth. Making nest? I wondered. Because soon they are gonna have babies? Bed materials? I kept wondering. Then one day I finally had a chance to walk up to the area they are always gatherinng - and figure what's around there in the grass. What I found was a tree seed with a wing - and it was scattered all over the - this 1 acre and half so of lot - I didn't know anything about maple seeds so I looked up the trees and wondered. Which tree gives away - its seeds - this early? It's not autumn yet. It's an early summer. Which tree gives away its seed at this timing? I looked around. But, true, there really aren't much trees. There are only - maples. Those maples? - true, they had their beautiful, massive bloomings - those little tiny reddish buds coming out like thousands - in very early - March or so - but I thought they are budding of leaves, not flowers. Do I know how maple flowers look like? Yeah, those little white ones but - when did I see them, and they turn into this massive - this many seeds in this only short while? that fast and quick? What's the merit of that? Animals would just rush to it and eat them all. They don't have to wait til autumn to get to solid seeds, packed with protein, some fat or oil and carbs - they will eat it all. What kind of advantage do you have by giving away your seeds so early so alone? It didn't seem like there is a way to get to the answer to this question. But in front of me, a chipmunk was still hauling as many as maple seeds possible into its both cheeks, relentlessly. So I picked up one. Peeled and got the seed out. It looked like a small edamame - beautiful green - and didn't smell bad - so I crashed it in beween my teeth. And it did not have any bad flavor. No bitterness or anything. Rather it had some similar good deep sweetness - with that black walnut, slightly. Not bad for something you just can pick up and eat. I thought. No wonder they go at it - and coming next one more week long or so, they were really at it all the time like machines - and I saw they are getting rounder and rounder. Still, I still don't know why maple trees do such an early give away of their all seeds. [+ Ignorance. But why we became so ignorant about these things? Why always looks like, feels like we know more - we are familiar with them, but actually we just don't know anything much - ? ] [+ How American people ate maple seeds? Maple has been very important part of our stuff - syrup, as wood - material - and then leaves - as visual element, symbol - then - what about our knowledge about its seeds, and relation with its seeds. Only seems we don't know anything much and we don't know why we know nothing about it. One mentioning on the web somewhere said these seeds are surely edible. But I don't see a recipe yet.]

[Image] Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania - A maasai man adjusts his belt which holds his sword. The central unit of Maasai society is the age-set. Although young boys are sent out with the calves and lambs as soon as they can toddle, childhood for boys is mostly playtime. Every 15 years or so, a new and individually named generation of Morans or Il-murran (warriors) will be initiated. This involves most boys between 12 and 25, who have reached puberty and are not part of the previous age-set. One rite of passage from boyhood to the status of junior warrior is a painful circumcision ceremony, which is performed without anaesthetic. During this period, the newly circumcised young men will live in a quot;manyatta quot;, a quot;village quot; built by their mothers. The manyatta has no protective encircling barricade for protection, emphasizing the warrior role of protecting the community. No inner krall is built, since warriors neither own cattle or undertake stock duties. Further rites of passage are required before achieving the status of senior warrior, culminating in the eunoto ceremony, the quot;coming of age quot;. When a new generation of warriors is initiated, the existing ilmoran will graduate to become junior elders, who are responsible for political decisions until they in turn become senior elders. The warriors are in charge of society's security, and spend most of their time now on walkabouts throughout Maasai lands, beyond the confines of their sectional boundaries. They are also much more involved in cattle trading than they used to be, developing and improving basic stock through trades and bartering rather than stealing as in the past.
