What a Tourist Should Observe about Karenni’s Secret Ways of Life Sep 13rd, 07 Culture shock might occur every second in Burma, a country of Southeast Asian that has at least a hundred different indigenous ethnic minorities living and sharing different forms of civilization and cultures among themselves. Karenni, one of the minorities, shares the least number of the country’s population. Though the community is regional, the values, beliefs, living styles and so forth are very rarely known to outsiders. As a result, Looking for similarity and difference in the society would be much preferable in order to avoid any misunderstanding. The most obviously important way of Karenni living-style is their close-knit interdependent relationship among family members. They are culturally raised to conceive that “blood is always thicker than water,” meaning if or in any case, family members are the only ones to call for helps and to trust. It is also a sign that unity and peace begin within family itself, according to some elders. Most adults are still living with their parents until reaching the day of getting married and then decide to live separately later on if they wish to. Strangely a married couple can still be with parents unless certain residency is considered. Living with parents does not necessarily interpret they are not financially and physically independent but because of showing that help is available 24/7. Furthermore, keeping family value is another factor. The more children you produce, the stronger the family grows. Part of the reasons why family-orientation is practiced is that since the state’s main economy is agriculture which practically requires more people to participate in getting the job done, having family members around is a terrific idea of having helping hands. Marrying at young immature age means gathering more members to get the business done on time as well. By the way, marriage in our community is forever. It is not divorceable like Christian belief. A divorced couple is believed to destroy the entire image of community that values relationship. It is incredibly challenging for that status to find a new partner. Friendship is an importance to Karenni people as well. They can lose a small business profit to somebody other than losing a friend because, to them, friendship between the two persons could jeopardize the whole two families’ closeness for a certain period of time. The cold relationship tends to last forever when a problem occurs since unfortunately direct constructive advice is not a form of alleviating or solving a problem at all. Born and raised in the same community for at least twenty years, I even think of myself as a secret keeper to come extent because I never tell anybody for something mistakenly done to me. I tend to cover disgruntled appearance toward somebody as much as I can because we were somehow taught to be passive but to extend friendship. You might need to apologize through a village headman in order to solve the other person’s dissatisfaction over your mistake. However, hospitality is an excellent example of how polite Karenni people are. They are very much happy to have a visitor home. They feel proud to have a chance of serving visitors because, as mentioned before, expanding friendship is one of their top priorities. Daily lifestyle are pretty much alike those of the rest of Burmese ethnics. Most outsiders usually criticize the way we greet each other, saying we are talking non-sense. It is because our casual greeting is saying like this, “Have you eaten? What was your curry?” Yes. It is true, and this is how the people usually communicate their preliminary to carry on the conversation. Your assumption mostly is correct that one is a Karenni ethnic if you encounter someone bowing down their heads while passing by or across people. “They believe keeping your eyes down while walking in front of people or talking is a generous sign of showing modesty and respect toward others: strangers, elderly and dignitaries,”( Khu Ti Reh, a former village headman of a Karenni community). Unlike Westerners, most of the Karenni people are “‘no’ users.” What it means is that even though they are offered something they like about it very much, the response still refuses your generous offers by saying, “No thank, I am fine.” They would still say “yes I am available” even though they have more important scheduled issues when some body, who is highly believed respected in the community, asks them to do a favor. Unlike Westerners, even if competitive, skilful on an issue, they would still say “I know very little, I am not good enough for it.” During conversation, older people are believed to sit higher than younger on a chair or table in the community. It is considered rude for younger sitting on a high position. No eye-contact is preferred. A manner, looking at someone very straight forward in any situation, could be thought as trying to plot something unacceptable. After all, comparing with their own country, a tourist, who reads the guide first, will definitely say “Oh what a nice people you are!,” surprisingly just minutes before leaving for home after a day of being given services and learning a close meaning of Karenni. Smiles is the Karenni way of greeting and saying “Good Bye.”
