Ohio University grad student and body builder, Scott Nykl, poses with his weekly water intake on Monday, May 12, 2008 in his apartment in Athens, Ohio. Originally a high school runner and basketball player, Nykl has been training in body building for the past 7 years. He trains 6-7 days a week for 3-4 hours at a time. As part of his diet and staying hydrated, Nykl's weekly fluid intake includes 20-25 gallons of water, 5 gallons of milk 7-10 20 oz. Gatorades, and 15 protein shakes. This June Scott Nykl will have earned his Master's in Computer Science. He has been accepted into and will begin Ohio University's Computer Science PhD program in September. This photo of Nykl sitting with his weekly water intake, is a photo that stands a status symbol. Moreover, his water intake alone, the sight of 25 gallons, is a symbol of the body building/social group Nykl has placed himself in. His muscular stature does the same, identifying him as a middle class bodybuilder. In less visual ways, his masters degree in computer science and future involvement in the computer science doctorate program here at Ohio University. By getting such high levels of education, Scott Nykl is raising his social status and his ability to be successful in the workforce once he's out of school.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Think of it as a new “normal” in American family life. After creeping slowly and steadily upward most of the last 50 years, the number of babies born to young unmarried women quietly crossed a troubling threshold in 2006. For the first time in a half-century of record-keeping, a majority of babies born to women younger than 30 were out of wedlock.

b quot;Fountain of Youth -- An Ethnography quot; /b On a bright and sunny summer day in Chicago, there were hundreds of kids and adults playing in the grand, newly constructed, downtown public fountain in Millennium Park. I was exploring the new surroundings and I snapped this photo. The line of kids in the photo were ordered as shown and self-arranged. They stand in what appears to be a representation of a Gaussian distribution, with the tallest of the children centered and facing forward and the smaller ones on the edges. The children of colour are on the outside of this group, with the girl on the far left looking dejected, standing with her arms behind herself, letting the water freely soak her body. The child on the far right crouches and covers his head in an act of protection from the downpour. Next to him is a boy wearing a fire-fighter's helmet, another symbol of protection, but its futility is obvious as the boy is drenched. He has his back facing outward, his face buried against the wall, as if he rejects his place in this group. In addition, the children of colour are the only ones wearing red clothing, as if they are trying to draw attention that they are on the fringe of this society. The wall itself may represent the built society. It has the appearance of red brick, but it is actually made of lighted rectangles. The white children are mainly girls, with the exception of a smaller boy in yellow trunks, and they are positioned in the middle of the line. Even the five centered girls suits' are ordered, with the three center girls in bikinis and the two flanking girls in one pieces. In addition, the blondest, most light colored children are in the middle. For example, the white boy has much darker hair than any of the white girls. These children are all covering their ears or eyes, as if to block what makes them uncomfortable in their surroundings. In this case maybe it is just the falling water, or maybe it something else, something more disturbing. Finally, I have these questions: Do the kids’ heights and positions measure their status in the group? What drove the kids to arrange themselves in this ordered way? Or, are these kids just out having fun on a warm summer day? They say a picture is worth a thousand words, I have only given you 441 to be exact. This is my interpretation of the photo, but it is just that, my interpretation. I would be interested to hear others' comments. PEACE!
